The Real Cost of Chasing Wellness Travel Trends (and what to build instead) : For boutique accommodations & spas

Every few months a new wellness trend takes over your feed. Cold plunge pools, forest bathing kits, infrared saunas, sound baths. And it becomes tempting to chase each one before your competitors do, because it feels like you need to keep up. But building your property around whatever trend is circulating is one of the most costly decisions you can make (and not just financially), and here's why.

Firstly, it costs you time. Trends change constantly, and chasing each one takes time. Researching what it actually involves. Training your team. Rebuilding parts of your operation to fit it in. Every hour spent keeping up with something new is an hour you didn't spend getting exceptional at the one thing only you can offer.

Secondly, it costs you money. New equipment, new staff, new training, new systems, every single trend brings its own bill. A cold plunge pool alone means the tub, the chiller, the safety signage, and a trained team member on hand every time it's used. None of that is a one off spend. The next trend shows up before you've finished paying for the last one, rather than putting the money into a space & offer that's sustainable.

Thirdly, it costs you your positioning. If your offering is built from the same trends every other hotel, resort, accommodation, spa or wellness space is adopting, you're one of five similar properties a guest is choosing between. Whatever you've added can be bought and copied by the property down the road within a season. Nothing about it is genuinely yours. Guests end up comparing you against those five other options on price and availability, instead of choosing you because there's a reason only you can give them.

Nobody sets out to get pulled into that cycle. It just happens, one trend at a time.

Here’s what to do instead: build a clear, unique point of difference.
Decide on the exact transformation you want your guests to feel the moment they walk through your door, as they are in your space and how they leave. Get specific about it.
Not "relaxation" or "restoration" in the generic sense every wellness property claims.
What’s the feeling you want to create? When you think about upgrading your own health and wellbeing, what is the feeling you are wanting to create for you?

Then build every part of your business from that. How your property is designed, the scent, the offers, the treatment menu, the classes, how they interact with staff, how the operations are run, how you lead. That level of specificity is what separates a property with a real point of difference from one that's simply assembled a list of amenities that sound wellness adjacent.

Two properties can offer the exact same cold plunge pool, the exact same Pilates class, the exact same massage style. A competitor down the road can buy identical equipment and hire someone trained in the identical technique. What they can't copy is depth. They can't buy years of getting genuinely excellent at one thing, refining it, learning exactly what your specific guests need from it, building a team around delivering it better than anywhere else.

That's what gets remembered. Not the cold plunge itself, but the fact that yours is the best version of it a guest has experienced, because it's the thing you've spent your energy perfecting instead of splitting that energy across whatever else is trending. That's what a guest tells their friends about. That's what brings them back. A property offering 10 nice offers which don’t connect is forgettable. A property that's genuinely exceptional at 1 thing is the one guests seek out specifically, and recommend by name.

While I say this, it doesn't mean every trend is worthless. Some genuinely earn their place, the ones with real physiological research behind them and a direct link to the transformation you're already building toward. If something aligns with what you're creating, it's worth integrating. What doesn't work is restructuring your operations, your training or your offering every time something new becomes popular, just because it's popular.

Pick the one thing you want your property to be known for. Write it down.
From here on, let it decide what gets added and what gets skipped. If you're still working out what this is for you, book a free 30 minute consultation and I’ll help you get clear 🌊
