The First Decision Every Transformative Wellness Stay, Spa or Space Starts With

Recently I was in a session with a client recently and she really wanted to focus on her operations. She wanted to build healthier, more sustainable systems through her space. While we spoke, she kept pulling toward the operational details but I kept bringing her back to the vision.

Not because I wasn’t going to explore the operational details. But because we hadn’t got clear on the vision- and this is where every other operational answer lives - from your offers, treatment menu, design, guest journey.

Understand this - your vision, the transformation you want to provide and how you want your guests to feel in your space is the most important decision. When you get clear on this, it removes a lot of guesswork, it reduces you spending money on options and items that don’t align with your core purpose.

Here’s an example… If you wanted your guests to feel calm and rejuvenated, maybe a couple arriving for a relaxing weekend. You might have soft, low lighting - especially for evening times. You might have gentle yoga classes and relaxation massages, with lavender and bergamot scents across your space. You might offer sound baths or similar relaxing activities that offer restful and calming experiences. Fluffy blankets and seating that allows someone to sink in and properly unwind.

If the feeling you want guests to leave with is inspired - especially for businesses or writers. Your space might have big windows that allow natural light to flood in. You might have energising exercise options, such as pilates or aqua aerobics. You might have more options in the gym, alongside deep tissues massages with citrus scents throughout your space. You might have life coaches for people to speak to, or even workshops that focus on practical ways to support our mind, body and soul in feeling inspired. You might have guided walks through nature. Seating that’s a little more upright to allow productivity.

Of course, there’s wellness offers and design that can allow for both inspiration and calm. But the important thing is that you’re clear on the aim. Clear on the vision and the feeling you want them to experience. And building (or refining) your space from there. Even if that’s calming spaces and inspirational space, but even that decision it itself is important to support guiding in guiding people through your space, as part of their guest journey.

The wellness field is HUGE, and wellness or wellbeing can mean so many different things to different people. There’s so many treatment options, wellness offers, types of fitness, nutrition and options in terms of design.

So instead of picking everything, pick 1 (or 2) options for transformation. What you want your space to be known for. Then let that guide every other decision you make.
